The University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust is a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary research and development, and includes a strong University of Manchester research presence as well as research active Trust departments.

In 2008/09 the Trust had 326 research projects in progress supported by over £7m in external funding from Research Councils, Charities, UK Government, international funders and industry, including commercial research contracts to develop new medicines, devices and procedures. With over 300 peer-reviewed papers published in 2008 research findings are informing local and national practice and policy.

The Trust is the Host for the Greater Manchester Comprehensive Local Research Network.
